The Z Hotel

Z hotel is the original boutique hotel on Zanzibar; opening in 2010, it brings casual relaxation blended with contemporary London–inspired design to the beaches of Zanzibar providing the 21st century traveller with a fresh and original beach-holiday experience. Set in a tropical garden just steps from Nungwi’s award winning beach and temperate Indian Ocean, the Z hotel will provide you with everything you need for a unique away-from-it-all holiday but with all the advantages of modern living.

The London-inspired design blends Philippe Starck furniture and lighting with Zanzibari features to create a bright, airy atmosphere. the Z was named one of the ‘trendiest hotels in Africa’ by TripAdvisor and the world travel awards – and the only one in Tanzania.

Whilst the hotel aims to offer a totally relaxed and stress-free environment, the location of the Z means they are also perfectly placed to offer the more ‘energetic’ guests some of the best diving, snorkeling and fishing available anywhere in the world as well as a range of water sports.

The Z hotel offers 39 rooms divided into categories: 17 deluxe sea view rooms, 16 deluxe garden-view rooms, three rooftop suites, two oceanfront cottages and one Z Suite – as follows:

  • The deluxe garden-view rooms are situated on the ground and first floors of the hotel and have views over the landscaped gardens, or the sea. In our opinion, the rooms are a little on the small side however they are perfect as a base for your bustling holiday in the North, all stylishly decorated and have tea/coffee making facilities, mini bar, electronic safe and hair dryer, as well as their own private deck. Some of the garden-view rooms benefit from a partial sea view, however this cannot be guaranteed.
  • The deluxe sea view rooms offer all the facilities of the deluxe garden-view rooms, but are located on the second floor. Unsurprisingly, they all have sea views!
  • On the third floor of The Z Hotel, is the large rooftop suite. As well as having all the amenities of a deluxe room, there’s also an outside shower, a plasma satellite TV, a DVD player, a sitting area and a private deck overlooking the garden or the coastline.
  • The 70m² Z Suite spreads across the entire rooftop of the hotel, giving it fabulous sea views from the two terraces. It includes the same facilities as the rooftop suite, plus a king-size bed, an outside shower and Jacuzzi, and a lounge area complete with cocktail bar.
  • The oceanfront cottages are totally separate from the rest of the accommodation at The Z Hotel. Built into the side of a cliff and arranged over two floors with a view out to sea, the rooms are furnished with a king-size bed and their own kitchenette, plus outdoor showers. To top it all off, there’s a floating deck from where you can soak up the sun as you listen to the lapping waves.

Dining & Entertainment

The Z Hotel has a number of different dining options available to guests:

  • Raised up on a deck, overlooking the sea, is the Cinnamon Café Bar, here they serve a range of drinks, snacks and light lunches; the menu features a ranges of Asian influenced dishes as well as western dishes such as burgers, fish and chips and salads.
  • For something fancier, the Saruche Restaurant offers a four-course menu of Africa/European cuisine with an emphasis on fresh seafood.
  • On the second floor you can find Rooftops Cocktail Bar, which has an extensive menu of cocktails and champagnes, as well as a selection of tapas and sharing platters. With its elevated location this is a great place to come and watch the sunset.
  • The Z Café Terrace is a new addition to the Z Hotel and serves a ranges of savory snacks, cakes, coffee and ice-cream.

The Z Hotel is located is the lively area of Nungwi in the north part of the island. This is a bustling little area, and guests who wish to escape the hotel can easily walk along the seafront where you’ll come across a number of different bars and restaurants to sample – most of which we have tried and tested, so can highly recommend the following:

  • LangiLangi Beach Bungalows Café (delicious seafood)
  • Baraka Beach Restaurant just past Z hotel; service is a bit slow but food is REALLY good and the cocktails are great
  • Mama Mia – AMAZING; belongs to two young Italians, Mimmo and Alfonso. The former is in charge of the banqueting room, the latter is a talented chef. The restaurant’s main feature is a terrace overlooking the sea and you can also have your meals right on the beach. The dishes they offer combine the high quality and freshness of local products. Mama Mia has also a wood-fired oven to offer its guests the genuine Italian pizza. Recently a homemade gelato shop inside the restaurant has further widened their gastronomic offer; perfect for those hot beach days!

It is also possible to walk to the Mnarani Marine Turtle Project; this is an excellent conservation initiative that works with local villagers and fishermen to conserve Zanzibar’s native turtles. Turtles caught in fishing nets are rescued by the project and looked after at their conservation pond, each February the turtles are then released back in the ocean.

The Z Hotel has a curio shop (the Azizi Boutique) and tour office that can organize activities for you during your stay – day trips to Stone Town, spice tours and Jozani Forest trips to name a few. They have an on-site dive centre that can arrange deep-sea fishing and sunset cruises. For the avid divers and snorkeling fans, there are many coral reefs off the coast of Nunwgi teeming with fish species such as napoleon wrasse, graceful manta rays, sharks, kingfish, turtles, barracuda and wahoo. Divers will appreciate fantastic wall dives, night dives and drift dives in warm, tropical waters and be rewarded with a rich diversity of marine life which surrounds Zanzibar.

That said, you might like to just spend your days lazing beside the pool, or perhaps on the adjacent beach; the perfect spots to relax! So for those preferring to relax at the actual hotel, there is a mini spa offering massages, manicures, pedicures and facials. Sun loungers are dotted along the beach, as well as surrounding the tanga-stone infinity pool on the edge of the gardens.
