Ibo Island Lodge

Imagine a remote Mozambican island lost in time and almost forgotten to the outside world for nearly a century. Picture grand, majestic architecture, some lovingly restored to their former glory while others have fallen into crumbling, marvellous ruins.

Be whisked to an idyllic white sandbank beach and dive some of Africa’s richest coral reefs. Snorkel, sea kayak, swim, fish, massage and relax. Take a Quirimbas mobile island hopping dhow safari. Snack on cashew nuts and tropical fruit and feast on seafood of every description.

Ibo Island Lodge is award nominated and has been described as one of the most magical, atmospheric and unique lodges in Africa. The island is also one of the oldest and most romantic settlements in Africa and is nominated for World Heritage Status.

All sea facing rooms feature an enormous 4 poster king size carved bed draped in romantic mosquito netting with rich sea scrape colours. High lofty ceilings still boast their original dark teak ceiling beams from which air conditioning and ceiling fans keep these beautiful rooms cool and comfortable. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with twin basins, baths, a large marble shower and a stunning range of guest amenities.

Frenchs style double doors let in the sea breeze and lead to a wide elegant veranda with comfy teak plantation chairs and soft cushions so that you can relax and contemplate Island life. Our sea facing rooms all afford beautiful views of the sea at high tide and an ever changing vista throughout the day as the tide changes, and traditional dhows drift out to sea. At low tide walk out onto the sand amongst the flamingos and storks and search for pieces of ancient Chinese porcelain said to be washed up from sunken wrecks.

Dining & Entertainment

At Ibo Island Lodge, a culinary splendour overcooks in the award nominated kitchen. Sublime desserts such as Ibo coffee éclairs, surf-fresh seafood platters, smoked sail fish, coconut and chilli traditional Ibo Island crab curry, crunchy green pawpaw salad and lobster are some of the highlights on the menu. Fruits of the ocean and other tropical dishes are all prepared by local chefs, unhurried and from scratch.

  • Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed in a number of different locations, served either in the privacy of your own veranda, on Ibo’s sandbank beach, at the fort of Joao Baptiste or under the palms in the tropical gardens.
  • Dinner becomes a little more extravagant and is served on the rooftop terrace under the stars and lantern light. With the shore just feet away, sometimes dolphins can be heard in the bay. Dining on Ibo is an event, elaborate and indulgent. Our extensive wine list compliments the cuisine. For those who are on an island honeymoon or celebrating something special, a candle lit dinner in a range of secret and special locations can be arranged for two.
