Nosy Ankao is part of approximately 15,000 hectares of protected marine space, which along with the adjacent mainland, makes up the Loky Manambato Protected Area. The "creators'" journey to Nosy Ankao began with entrepreneur and treasure hunter, Jean Christophe Peyre, who has been an adventurer in Madagascar for over 25 years. Miavana Island is located opposite a protected area on the Madagascan mainland, and is only reachable by helicopter.
